If you’ve been in the blogging industry long enough, launching a blog comes up every few years. I typically have dismissed the conversations around “Are blogs making a comeback?” but when I heard rumblings of the “blogging being back” this year, it hit me differently. It affirmed that It was probably time to revisit launching a blog in 2023.
Launching a blog: an antidote to influencer burnout?
I often feel imposter syndrome when calling myself a content creator or influencer because of how inconsistent I have been over the last few years.
The inconsistency stemmed from social media burnout. As Instagram kept changing and requiring more and more attention to it, the more exhausting it felt. I was no longer posting in a way that felt fun and creative. Instead, I was posting in ways to make the algorithm happy.
Can you relate?
I saw Brittney Hennesy post on Instagram a while back about how blogs were not to be dismissed, even in 2023. Why? because it’s a way to prevent burnout.
This hit me so hard.
To have a successful blog here’s what you don’t have to do:
• 1 reel a day
• an in-feed post a day
• post 6 stories a day
• engage 20-60 minutes a day
Sound like your Instagram checklist? Yeah, mine too.
And you know what? from the research I’ve been doing, you don’t even have to post a blog post more than once a week.
Needless to say, that is more than enough to make me excited to be launching a blog in 2023.
Is it profitable though?
Full transparency here – I have not monetized a blog since peak blogging days in 2014. Any traffic that I built up to go to that blog is history since that blog is long gone and this guy is a year old. While it’s a year old, it’s been collecting dust as well because I wasn’t quite sure if I was ready to commit to it. So let’s go ahead and call that the soft launch…and in the interim I’ll try to think of some fun ways to do an official “launch.”
In order to be sure that this would be worth my time, I did months of research and talked to others in the industry to see how blogs are still monetizing.
The truth is – blogs never really went anywhere, they’re still a way to bring in an income whether it be through ads or affiliate links.
You’ll never regret growing your list
One of the many things that actual blogs are good at doing are driving leads to your email list. An email address will always be such a powerful tool as an Influencer. Let’s say that your Instagram account gets hacked. What’s the best place to let your audience know where they can find you now? If they opted into your email list, all you have to so is shoot out a quick email!
I have not given my email list a lot of love recently, but I do want to start prioritizing it again. I was also thinking the other day how when I do send out an email, I have such a high open rate. Why am I not leveraging this more with brands? Even if my Instagram engagement rate isn’t where I want it to be – it’s still a big help for a brand campaign if you have a high open-rate – if not more valuable because there’s a higher chance of a conversion to a sale!
